Next-Gen Fiat 500e Spied Electrifying The Snow In Sweden

There’s a completely new electric Fiat 500 on the way. We’ve already caught the revamped 500e testing a couple of times wearing heavy camouflage, and the prototype in this latest crop of spy photos is as covered up as ever. It appears Fiat is very keen to get the most from its small EV in all weather conditions, as this time it was spotted in the snowy regions of northern Sweden.

Battery range for electric cars can be affected by cold weather, and the previous 500e wasn’t a range rockstar to begin with. It was rated at just 100 miles in the city, but that version of the plucky runabout wasn’t originally designed to be an electric car. The prototype you see here, however, is a dedicated EV from the ground up, and as such we’re expecting to see improvements in both range and performance. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced the new platform back in 2018, and it’s destined to underpin several different models within the FCA umbrella. The Fiat 500 will be the first to use it.

That said, there’s still very little info regarding the details of this new architecture. However, the body will obviously be easily recognizable as the 500 we know and love, with the overall shape and even the Fiat’s iconic four-light front fascia identifiable through the camo. There likely won’t be a traditional grille, and it probably won’t have gobs of range like you might find with a Tesla Model 3 Long Range model. We’ve heard the new 500e’s mission will still be that of an urban commuter car, but a range approaching 150 or 200 miles would certainly help sales.

The standard 500 will continue to be sold in its current form alongside the new EV, though ICE-powered models using the new architecture are expected in a few years. The 500e should also return to U.S. shores as a 2021, but it will debut first for Europe and that could happen in as little as a few weeks at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show.

They are pushing, screaming and defending their new design language all over, yet, they are deaf to peoples reaction. Good for you BMW, sometimes a wakeup call is need it. Except some will go for good…

In Kansas, aftermarket wheels (or anything else) violate classic car status | ClassicCars.com Journal

In Kansas, you can lose your classic license tags if your wheels — or any other parts — aren’t factory issued

We recently reported on the collector car community being called to action. Well, the calls continue:

There has been some fine print in the Kansas regulations regarding vintage vehicles that states that any modifications made to a vehicle more than 35 years old can violate the owner’s right to an antique license plate.

“The vast majority of people have no idea, like myself, that technically with my vehicles I am in violation of the law,” Kansas state Rep. Stephen Owens, R-Hesston, recently told NBC television affiliate KSNW. Owens, who according to the Topeka Capital-Journal newspaper, owns a 1927 Ford Model A, added that enforcement of the modification violation “has been stepped up” in the past year.

How strict has that enforcement been? People have had their antique tags confiscated for such things as putting aftermarket wheels on their vehicles.

One example reported by the television station: The owner of a 1967 Pontiac Firebird was stopped by a highway patrol officer for having the wrong wheels and tires on his car. 

“You cannot have aftermarket tires and wheels on your vehicle with that classic tag,” the Firebird’s owner was told as he was tickets and his tags were impounded.

Rep. Owens is among those supporting House Bill 2528, which was introduced in January and which last week left the Committee on Transportation with a recommendation that it be passed by the full legislature.

The new bill would change language in the law to accept a vehicle as antique based on age, not on specific equipment installed since it was purchased.

“I had one one of my constituents say why are you wasting your time on this when we have a life amendment or we have this vote to make?” Owens told the TV station. “It doesn’t work that way. It’s not that we just sit here waiting on the big votes. There are so many things and to a number of people this is a big issue.”

Meanwhile, on a national scale, SEMA has scheduled its annual Washington Rally, officials it’s “Salute to the American Automotive Performance & Motorsports Industry,” for May 13.

The event is open to SEMA members and includes legislative briefings, face-to-face meetings with members of Congress and a luncheon on Capitol Hill, as well as visits to various Washington, D.C. attractions.

One issue certain to be discussed is the RPM Act that would overturn the EPA ruling that vehicles produced for street use cannot be converting for purposes of motorsports competition. 

“Converting street vehicles into dedicated race vehicles is an American tradition dating back decades and has negligible environmental impact.,” SEMA notes, adding, “While California is known for having the strictest emissions laws, the state exempts racing vehicles from regulation.” 

Registration for the event closes on April 1.

Singapore announces electric push – rebate for EVs, charging network expansion to 28,000 points by 2030

Singapore has announced it is making a push to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EV) beginning from next year, as it makes the move towards phasing out the sale of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2040.

New measures to make EVs a more attractive proposition were announced by the country’s deputy prime minister Heng Swee Keat in his Budget speech earlier today. This includes expanding the EV charging infrastructure in the republic from 1,600 points presently to 28,000 island-wise by 2030. It will also include an early-adoption incentive scheme for EVs, which will be in place from 2021 to 2023.

“We are placing a significant bet on EVs, and leaning policy in that direction because it is the most promising technology. Our vision is to phase out ICE vehicles and have all vehicles run on cleaner energy by 2040,” he said.

The country already has a Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) in place. Introduced in 2018 and valid till December 31 this year, this provides an upfront rebate of up to S$20,000 (RM59,700) for the cleanest, low-emission vehicles. This is set to be replaced with the introduction of an EV early adoption incentive scheme, which will see a rebate of 45% off the vehicle’s additional registration fee (ARF), capped at an identical S$20,000 (RM59,700).

According to the country’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), the new scheme – whjch is expected to cost the government an estimated S$71 million over the next three years – will lower the upfront cost of an electric car by an average of 11% and narrow the upfront cost gap between electric and ICE cars.

UPDATE: Earlier, Singaporean publication Today reported that the early adoption incentive would provide further rebates on top of that offered by the VES, but this is not the case, based on the information offered by the LTA. There is also no mention that the VES will be extended, and the story has been updated accordingly.

A Commercial Vehicle Emissions Scheme for light goods vehicles, similar to VES – which is applicable for cars and taxis – will also be introduced, with details of that plan expected to be announced in the next few weeks.

The government is also set to revise the method of calculating road tax for EVs. which is tiered by power rating, from January 2021. According to the LTA, this will lead to an across-the-board reduction in this variable component of road tax for EVs and some hybrids.

However, a lump-sum tax will be imposed For EVs to offset the loss of fuel excise duties, which yields the government a significant revenue of around S$1 billion a year. This additional tax will be phased in over three years, beginning next January at a rate of S$200 (RM597), then S$400 (RM1,193) in 2022 and S$700 (RM2,088) from 2023 onwards.

“Ideally, we would like to implement a usage-based tax on EVs as an alternative to fuel excise duties. But the technology to do this properly on EVs is the next generation ERP (electronic road pricing) system, and distance-based charging using ERP is still several years away,” Heng said.

“Total road tax, after the revision in methodology and the new lump-sum tax, will be higher for some EV models. However, EV buyers can expect to enjoy substantial cost savings because of the significant EV early adoption incentive,” he explained. The LTA says that under the revised road tax framework, mass market EVs will incur an annual usage cost which will still be about 9% lower than their ICE equivalents.

8 Ways the Honda Civic Type R TCR Race Car is Better than the Road Car

DAYTONA, Florida–Honda invited us to this year’s BMW Endurance Challenge at Daytona, which was the first race for the Civic Type R TCR. For some drivers, this series could be the first rung in the ladder to climb up to higher tiers of racing.

Although the three teams running Honda’s car couldn’t quite surpass all of the mighty Hyundai Veloster N and Audi RS3 TCR cars, the top Civic Type R teams finished comfortably mid pack. Rather than providing extensive factory backing for its teams like Hyundai does, Honda merely affiliates itself with the customers who purchase its cars—it doesn’t sink its own funds into the teams.

As you may recall, we at Automobile kept a Honda Civic Type R in our stable of long-term cars for an entire year, giving us plenty of time to get really familiar with its capabilities while zipping around town or taking longer road trips. While our long-termer was a total sweetheart, and repeatedly confirmed its All-Star status during its tenure, Honda’s race car version of the mega hot hatch is a beast on another, much less street-legal level.

Here are eight ways the Honda Civic Type R TCR is more savage than its road-going sibling.

More power

Ever read an article about a racing version of a street car but then got to the part where it talks about the drivetrain? If you’re like us, it’s a bit saddening when we learn a racecar doesn’t get a bump in power. Fortunately, that’s not the case with the Civic Type R TCR. A slew of engine upgrades ratchets the output up to 340 hp (compared to the standard 306 hp) thanks to improvements that include an HPD/Borla downpipe and turbo-back exhaust. The race car Type R also receives an HPD/CSF radiator, auxiliary oil coolers, and HPD cooling ducts. In total, the Civic Type R TCR has just 8.1 pounds to haul around with each horsepower, an improvement of about 2 lbs per horsepower (nearly 20 percent) over the road-going Civic Type R.

Upgraded suspension

Any racecar worth its salt needs beefier suspension than its road-going sibling, and the Civic Type R TCR is no exception. While we here at Automobile love the street car’s three-mode suspension settings, Honda took things a couple steps farther with HPD/Bilstein inverted double adjustable dampers, Eibach race springs, and HPD front camber and caster plates. To further enhance the car’s cornering capabilities, Honda offers its TCR car with a HPD/RV6 rear adjustable stabilizer bar and rear lower arms designed to take race spring rates.

Bigger brakes

To accompany all of the equipment that helps the Civic Type R TCR get going, Honda provides its race car with some serious stopping power. The front brakes have six-piston calipers, an improvement over the 2019 racecar. Brake rotors remain the same size but instead of being the OEM disc, HPD adds its Girodisc two-piece units. The brake lines and ABS actuator get an upgrade too, and Honda offers the car with varying brake compounds for endurance and sprint racing.

Even more aero

Detractors of the road car will say that it has too many aerodynamic elements and that they wouldn’t want to be seen in this hot hatch on the street. Honda’s taken this aspect of the Type R another step beyond with a massive adjustable wing. It also gets a big front splitter. Unlike the haters, this is a car in which we’d definitely want to be seen.

Lightweighting measures

As a privateer or race team owner, one of the advantages of purchasing a Civic Type R TCR is that J.A.S. Motorsport in Italy builds the car from a body-in-white, which includes the doors and hood. The bodywork is largely made from composite materials, which is also installed ahead of delivery. Naturally, the interior is devoid of sound deadening and normal creature comforts.

Huge transmission upgrades

The transmission is an area where this racecar diverges from its more pedestrian counterpart. We love the slick, short throws from the road car’s manual transmission, but the racecar ditches its six-on-the-floor in favor of a sequential gearbox. The six-speed paddle-shifted transmission still has three-pedals (the clutch helps get the car in gear), but once it’s on the track the driver just needs the throttle and brake pedals.

A big fuel tank

One of our staff’s few gripes with the Civic Type R is that the gas tank isn’t quite where it needs to be for the long haul of a road trip. Whereas the model for the non-racing public can store 12.39 gallons of gas in its tank, the fuel cell in the TCR car is a massive 26.4 gallons, which lasts for about an hour and a half during a race.

Race Ready

Like we said earlier, the car comes prepared and ready to race (pending setup) from J.A.S. Motorsport. Before options, the official sticker price is $172,238—and that figure also excludes any export, import, or tariff charges that may apply. Honda offers a bunch of other helpful gear and support for people new to the platform or new to racing, including setup tools, spare parts, an upgraded ABS system, data logging gear, and homologation documents as well.  Overall, it’s about as out-of-the-box as racecars get, and we’d bet it’d be challenging to build out one’s own car for a comparable price.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe arrives with 603 horsepower and more bragging rights

The latest Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe would like a word with your expectations and definitions for a tall-riding luxury crossover. That word is “goodbye.”

On Tuesday, the German automaker unveiled the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe with an electrified twin-turbo V-8, 22-inch wheels, and a sport-tuned air suspension system.

It will sit above the less powerful GLE Coupe and 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 Coupe when it goes on sale in the U.S. in fall 2020.

Turbos and electrons

As with any AMG model, it starts with what’s under the hood. AMG’s hand-built, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 makes 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a 48-volt electrical system that can supplement the engine with up to 21 hp and 184 lb-ft in certain situations, including quicker initial acceleration. A 9-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four 22-inch wheels.

Mercedes-AMG said the rakish crossover SUV will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds on its way to an electronically limited 174 mph top speed.

The powertrain has seven drive modes that modify engine response, transmission, suspension, and steering including: Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, Race, Trail, and Sand.

Standard air suspension, adaptive dampers, and active roll bars will help keep the big hatchback on stilts upright and tie into the 48-volt electrical system. There are three modes for the suspension separate from the drive modes: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. The system can level the crossover to adjust for heavy loads and lowers the GLE63 S Coupe at speeds over 74 mph for better fuel-efficiency.

To control wheel slip and help accelerate out of corners an electronically controlled locking rear differential is standard.

Braking power comes from six-piston fixed front calipers that grab 15.7-inch front rotors with single-piston floating calipers and 14.6-inch discs in the rear. A carbon ceramic brake rotor upgrade will be on the options list to remove mass and prevent cooking the brakes on a racetrack.

Pretty, yet aggressive

The GLE63 S Coupe puts an angrier face on a pretty SUV. A Panamericana grille instantly ties the GLE63 S Coupe to the other performance cars from Affalterbach, while the gaping intakes on both sides of the front bumper are ready to suck in every bit of air to feed the turbocharged V-8 engine.

The rakish roofline carries over from other GLE models, but the fenders give the GLE63 S a bulldog-like appearance. Out back, AMG-specific quad rectangular exhaust tips bark the 4.0-liter’s song.

Inside, the GLE Coupe gets the AMG treatment with nappa leather, AMG badges, three-spoke flat-bottom AMG steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles, and AMG Drive Unit steering wheel buttons to change the vehicle parameters on the fly. Swaths of carbon fiber trim cover the dashboard and doors.

Mercedes-Benz didn’t say how much the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe will cost when it arrives in the U.S. in fall 2020, but expect it to start from about $115,000 like the outgoing model.

Daytona 500 terrifying finish-line crash gives NASCAR fans, drivers pause

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — In a single thrilling lap around NASCAR’s most storied track, Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman displayed the risks and rewards of the dangerous sport they both love.

Hamlin won his second consecutive Daytona 500 and third in five years on Monday night as he surged past Newman on the final lap of a second overtime shootout. The win came as Newman’s car, at nearly 200 mph was turned hard into the wall, then flipped onto its roof, where he was helpless as he was hit in the driver’s side by another car.

His car continued to skid upside down along the speedway and it crossed the finish line in flames as safety crews hurried to snuff out the fire and pry Newman loose. It took several minutes for his car to be rolled back onto its wheels, and medical personnel used solid black barriers to block the view as the 2008 Daytona 500 winner was placed in a waiting ambulance and taken to a hospital.

All the while, a sense of dread settled over Daytona and its showcase race, already pushed back a day by rain that dampened a raucous visit by President Donald Trump. There has not been a fatality in NASCAR’s elite Cup Series since 2001, but Newman’s crash had everyone worried.

The damage to his Mustang was extensive — it appeared the entire roll cage designed to protect his head had caved — and officials would not allow his team near the accident site. Two agonizing hours after the crash, NASCAR read a statement from Roush Fenway Racing that said Newman was in “serious condition, but doctors have indicated his injuries are not life threatening.”

By Tuesday, Newman was reported as being awake and speaking with family and doctors.

Roush Fenway Racing released that update about 20 hours after Newman’s crash.

Everyone watching feared the worst Monday night and had to wait nearly two hours to learn that Newman’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. The latest update was more good news for the 42-year driver and 2008 Daytona 500 champion.

Hamlin, meanwhile, was trying to find the delicate balance of celebrating a milestone victory while showing proper respect to an injured driver. Initially unaware of Newman’s situation, Hamlin did victory burnouts and celebrated with his team.

Not until Fox Sports said it would not interview him did Hamlin learn the severity of the situation. Team owner Joe Gibbs was apologetic for the No. 11 team’s initial reaction.

“I was focusing on our car, and everybody started celebrating around us,” Gibbs said. “So I say to everybody out there, some people may have saw us and said, ‘Well, these guys are celebrating when there’s a serious issue going on.’ I apologize to everybody, but we really didn’t know.”

The crash was a stark reminder of both the dangers of auto racing and the improvements NASCAR has made since 2001, when Dale Earnhardt was killed on the final lap of the Daytona 500. Earnhardt was the last Cup driver killed in a race and NASCAR has made massive safety improvements in the nearly 20 years since.

“I think we take for granted sometimes how safe the cars are,” Hamlin said. “But number one, we are praying for Ryan.”

Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports, acknowledged the delay for information on Newman.

“To hear some positive news tonight is a relief,” Rushbrook said. “He is so respected for being a great competitor by everyone in the sport.”

Newman had taken the lead on the final lap when Ryan Blaney’s bumper caught the back of his Ford and sent him hard right into the wall. 

Drivers were stricken with concern, including Hamlin, the first driver since Sterling Marlin in 1995 to win consecutive Daytona 500’s.

“It’s a weird balance of excitement and happiness for yourself, but someone’s health and their family is bigger than any win in any sport,” he said. “We are just hoping for the best.”

Runner-up Blaney said he got a push from Hamlin that locked him in behind Newman in a move of brand alliance for Ford.

“We pushed Newman there to the lead and then we got a push from the 11 … I was committed to just pushing him to the win and having a Ford win it and got the bumpers hooked up wrong,” he said.

Hamlin had eight Ford drivers lined up behind him as the leader on the second overtime shootout without a single fellow Toyota driver in the vicinity to help him. It allowed Newman to get past him for the lead, but the bumping in the pack led to Newman’s crash.

Hamlin’s win last year was a 1-2-3 sweep for Joe Gibbs Racing and kicked off a yearlong company celebration in which Gibbs drivers won a record 19 races and the Cup championship. Now his third Daytona 500 win puts him alongside six Hall of Fame drivers as winners of three or more Daytona 500s. He tied Dale Jarrett — who gave JGR its first Daytona 500 win in 1993 — Jeff Gordon and Bobby Allison. Hamlin trails Cale Yarborough’s four wins and the record seven by Richard Petty.

This victory came after just the second rain postponement in 62 years, a pair of red flag stoppages and two overtimes. The 0.014 margin of victory was the second closest in race history, trailing only Hamlin’s win over Martin Truex Jr. in 2016 (0.01 seconds)

The win in “The Great American Race” is the third for Toyota, all won by Hamlin. Gibbs has four Daytona 500 victories as an owner.

Tesla will be extending the range of recently built Model S sedans and Model X SUVs via a software update, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said: “All S/X cars made in recent months have actually been above stated EPA range. Will be unlocked soon for free via software update.” As of this writing, the EPA has not updated its range estimates for either vehicle’s long-range version but, then again, neither Musk nor Tesla have a reputation for letting such things get in the way. Elsewhere in Tesla and Tesla-adjacent news, more than 14,000 Tesla Model X SUVs were being recalled for a power-steering issue, we learned that Bill Gates made his first-ever electric-car purchase — a Porsche Taycan — and a Tesla driver tried too hard to replicate Musk’s disruption of subways by crashing into a … Subway. We also learned that people in Rhode Island don’t mind their own business.

More Range for Model S, Model X?

Musk’s tweet and subsequent replies to questions don’t paint a particularly clear picture of things. It seems Model S and Model X cars built within a certain time period are equipped with “small hardware improvements,” but what those are, when the improvements began or when the claimed updated ranges will take effect are all unknown. Musk also said that crossing the 400-mile range barrier might be possible with “improved wheels and tires” and that that sort of improvement would perhaps be available to all previous models. If and when the EPA updates its range estimates for Tesla models, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Model X Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced last week that about 14,100 model-year 2015-16 Tesla Model X SUVs were under recall. Aluminum bolts that attach the power steering gear assist motor to the gear housing may corrode and fracture, causing a reduction or complete loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash. Who could’ve predicted that the co-founder of Microsoft would prefer an older, more-established legacy brand like Porsche over an upstart, popular brand with an almost cultlike following like Tesla? (To be fair, Gates is actually a huge Porsche fan, and it’s rumored that he used some of his immense wealth to lobby for a law to be changed to allow him to legally import his beloved Porsche 959.) Gates also credited Tesla for driving the market toward mass adoption of electric vehicles.

An Abrupt Subway Stop

In my best Chris Farley voice: Remember, like, when Elon Musk was talking about building, like, tunnels exclusively for Teslas to avoid traffic and “disrupting” transit and everyone pointed out that subways already exist and are much more efficient at moving people from place to place? That was awesome. Well, in a heavy-handed metaphor, a Tesla Model X driver in Washington state crashed into a Subway restaurant, likely “disrupting” the hell out of the dining experience of any patrons and the work experience of its employees. One passenger was treated for minor injuries. It also bears noting that the driver claimed the car had “malfunctioned.”

Thanks to a letter from an anonymous author, the Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles revoked the license plate of one Tesla owner over an allegedly crass vanity plate that reads “FKGAS.” The letter writer said that, “I think this plate reflects poorly on Rhode Island, and should be revoked.” Not exactly a Buddy Cianci-level offense — but enough, evidently, to spur bureaucratic change.

Sealy, TX (Feb. 18, 2020)—The Team from Hennessey Performance Engineering (HPE) brought serious power and luxury to the NADA Show in Las Vegas this weekend when they unveiled their latest colossal creation, the Hennessey GOLIATH 700 GMC Sierra Denali.

While 420 hp may be merely capable in stock form with the venerable 6.2 liter V8, HPE thoroughly ups the ante with a 2.9 liter supercharger at six lbs of boost for a total of 700 hp. Further enhancements include upgraded camshaft, upgraded pushrods, professional installation and dyno tuning.

Rounding out the HPE GOLIATH 700’s purpose-built prominence is HPE’s Stage-1 Off-Road package, complete with six-inch lift, custom 20” HPE wheels, 35” tires, custom HPE bumper with LED lighting and much more.

Thanks for posting, OP.

I have been “patiently” waiting for media with the X6MC in a lighter color to see the lines better that the darker colors show. The Urban/Manhattan green didn’t attract my eye that well.

My current gen X6M has the same color scheme as the one featured in this video, so I won’t be going with the same when it’s time to spec one of these late next year, but I’m ready to experience the new interior NOW
