Toyota teases new B-segment SUV – debuts in Geneva

Toyota has previously stated that it would introduce a SUV positioned below the C-HR, and we won’t need to wait long to see it in full. The Japanese carmaker recently announced that its new B-segment SUV will make its global debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.

Details of the unnamed model are scarce for now, but it is said to blend “Toyota’s extensive small car experience with its strong SUV heritage.” The SUV is also described as having a raised ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and will benefit from the company’s hybrid powertrain technology.

Based on prior reports, the SUV will be underpinned by the TNGA-B platform, which is also used for the fourth-generation Yaris. As Toyota’s release suggests, the model could receive the same powertrain offerings as the Yaris, including a M15A 1.5 litre M15A Dynamic Force three-cylinder engine that can be mated to either a Direct Shift-CVT or six-speed manual gearbox.

There’s also a hybrid version that sees the M15A being paired with the Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) in either front-wheel drive or E-Four (electric all-wheel drive) configurations. A third option is a 1KR 1.0 litre three-cylinder that goes with a Super CVT-i transmission.

Design-wise, Toyota’s earlier teaser sketch showed a rather angular-looking vehicle with squared-off wheel arches and a distinct window line that is kinked near the C-pillar. This latest announcement comes with a shadowy view of the vehicle in its final form, with notable cues being a rakish rear window and slim taillights. At first glance, there’s certainly an air of the current RAV4 in the SUV’s design, at least from the rear.

When launched, Toyota’s new B-segment SUV will compete against other models like the Renault Captur, Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Juke. Look forward to the Geneva Motor Show, where Toyota will finally reveal all.

Toyota Racing Development, Gazoo Racing brands to coexist in the US with different approaches – report

When it comes to factory-fitted performance enhancements for Toyota vehicles, the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) sub-brand has been well established. Having built engines for the Japanese manufacturer’s racing exploits in its earlier days, TRD has gone on to stamp its name on various passenger vehicle models such as the Camry, Avalon and numerous others.

With the arrival of the Gazoo Racing nameplate on Toyota’s latest performance models such as the GR Supra and the GR Yaris, where does that leave TRD? Both will operate side by side as performance sub-brands for the automaker, said Toyota group vice president for marketing Ed Laukes to Automobile magazine.

Toyota believes that the TRD brand is here to stay with TRD versions of models such as the aforementioned Avalon and Camry, and the addition of the GR brand means that Toyota will be the only major brand in the United States with two distinct performance divisions, Laukes added.

While the GR Yaris is being studied for viability in the US market, the 2.0 litre GR Supra is likely to go on sale in that market.

Both performance sub-brands will have to be sufficiently distinguished from each other if this strategy is to work, Automobile noted; where TRD applied developments and refinements to existing models in Toyota’s line-up, models under the GR line-up will remain bespoke, and the GR Supra and the GR Yaris are two examples of building the sub-brand without crossing into TRD territory.

Though the Supra has already entered the US market, the GR Yaris hasn’t followed suit, although Toyota’s product planners are thinking about if it makes good business sense to sell it in the market, Laukes said. One GR model that appears likely to join the brand’s US line-up is the 2.0 litre GR Supra, which has been certified for sale in California, according to Motor Trend.

This four-cylinder Supra will use the B48 engine used in BMWs, and which produces 258 hp between 5,000 rpm and 6,500 rpm, and 400 Nm of torque between 1,550 rpm and 4,400 rpm. These are sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF 8HP51 automatic gearbox, and offers a 100 kg weight saving over the 3.0 litre GR Supra, says Toyota.

2020 Toyota Alphard and Vellfire open for booking – now with Toyota Safety Sense, RM383k-RM465k on

UMW Toyota Motor has announced that the order books have opened for the 2020 Toyota Alphard and Vellfire, which have been revised with new features as part of a model year update. No exterior or interior changes to the CBU, fully-imported third-gen AH30 facelift, which went on sale here in 2018, but the MPVs now come with additional kit and features.

Leading the list is the inclusion of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). The suite of driver assist systems include Pre-collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) – All Speed.

Also making its way on is a parking support brake system, which can detect objects in the surrounding areas of the vehicle during the parking process. Should it detect an object in the path of the vehicle, the brakes will be automatically applied and the engine power cut back so that a collision can be avoided.

There’s also a tyre pressure monitoring system as well as a vehicle telematics system. The latter feature uses GPS/GSM connectivity to track the location of the car at all times, and it can also monitor and record vehicle speeds and other operating conditions that the vehicle has been subjected to, with data sent by email to a designated user.

Additionally, the infotainment system has also been upgraded, with a new nine-inch AVX infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity replacing the previous seven-inch DVD-AVN navigation system. The update also introduces a front and rear digital video recorder into the mix.

No changes to the running gear, with the Alphard continuing with the 2GR-FKE 3.5 litre V6 that arrived with the facelift. The mill, which offers 300 PS at 6,600 rpm and 361 Nm of torque between 4,600 and 4,700 rpm, is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Likewise, the 180 PS and 235 Nm 2AR-FE 2.5 litre Dual VVT-i four-cylinder unit on the Vellfire, which is mated to a CVT.

The extras however mean that there is also an increase in pricing – the estimated pricing for the 2020 Vellfire 2.5 is RM383,000, which would be an increase of RM21,000 over the current RM362,000. As for the 2020 Alphard, prices will start from RM465,000 for the standard 3.5, which is RM22,000 more than at present. Incidentally, the 3.5 Executive Lounge, which was originally sold here but dropped from the current line-up, is now back in the frame. No mention of pricing for the Executive Lounge as yet.

Five exterior shades are available for the Vellfire and Alphard – Luxury White Pearl Crystal Shine Glass Flake (only for the Alphard 3.5L and 3.5 Executive Lounge), Burning Black CS GF (only for Vellfire 2.5L) and White Pearl CS, Graphite Metallic and Black (available for both Alphard and Vellfire).

TAS 2020: A90 Toyota GR Supra left, right and centre

If you’ve not been to the Tokyo Auto Salon, you’d be forgiven to assume that Makuhari Messe would be a three-day fest celebrating the legends – think R32-R34 GT-Rs, the A80 Supra, FC-FD RX-7, Evo/Subaru, Silvias and Hachirokus, NSX and “real VTEC” Type Rs, you get the drift – and an assortment of kei cars.

Last year was our first time there, and we were rather surprised to find that the icons were rather hard to come by. Unlike us, the Japanese respect the legends but live in the present. Which is why almost every booth had a Suzuki Jimny, and the FK8 Honda Civic Type R came in second as the most popular TAS 2019 exhibit. The undisputed car of TAS 2020 is the Toyota GR Supra.

The A90 was everywhere we looked, acting as a canvas for purveyors of aftermarket performance parts, bodykits, wheels and everything else. It even served as a “project car” for the students of Nihon Automobile College. It sure didn’t seem like the A90 was being treated like a pariah for sharing parts with a BMW roadster and being made in Austria.

We start with the biggest of them all, HKS. The legendary tuner had three cars in its booth, all GR Supras. The one with the famous HKS Super Oil livery is the drift machine of Nobuteru Taniguchi. This one no longer has the BMW B58 3.0L engine under the hood, but the 2JZ-GTE from the previous Supra. Famous for being tuneable to crazy hp, this 2JZ has over 700 horses.

To be used by Taniguchi in the D1GP championship and FIA Intercontinental Drift Challenge, this drift car comes with HKS’ own widebody kit, Advan Racing GT wheels, a huge GT wing and a deep dish Nardi Classico steering wheel.

More interesting are the wingmen. The white A90 in you see below (and in the lead pic) is the HKS GR Supra Aero. As its name suggests, this is a showcase for HKS’ widebody kit for the street. Much like Taniguchi’s drift car without the livery and big wing (neat ducktail instead), you can see the details a lot better in white, contrasted with forged carbon. Those red wheels are 20-inch Advan Racing R6 items.

The subtle black car is the HKS GR Supra Street, which is a showcase for HKS’ performance parts. As tested by Manabu ‘Max’ Orido, the parts (for the stock BMW engine, not 2JZ) include a full HKS Super Turbo exhaust system, fully adjustable HKS Hipermax suspension, HKS Mastery ECU and a cold air intake with HKS Super Power Flow filter.

Interestingly, we also spotted a special tool kit for the A90 by Tone, as this Supra, which is of course a sister car of BMW and made in Europe, won’t play well with typical tools designed for Japanese cars.

Another prominent Supra at TAS was a satin green monster by Tachi Oiwa Motor Sports. Not just a concept, TOM’S Supra is a 99-unit limited edition priced at 14.23 million yen (RM570k).

The tuner synonymous with Toyota didn’t just do an engine swap, but worked on the BMW six-pot to squeeze out 460 PS/579 Nm, which is an extra 120 PS/79 Nm over stock. They did it by changing the turbocharger and intercooler, ECU tuning and a high-flow exhaust system. To match, TOM’S fitted its Advox fully-adjustable suspension and upgraded the front brakes to Brembo six-pot calipers grabbing 380 mm discs.

The aggressive body styling is quite unique – clearly fatter than the already muscular stock A90, but smoothly executed. The voluptuous side profile is nice, but the rear will be the most common view for most cars on the road – here, there’s a big park bench wing sitting on top of the original integrated ducktail, plus vertically stacked exhaust tips, two on each side.

The lower body and big diffuser are all in carbon, accented by a lime green pinstripe. If you’re wondering, no those aren’t typically Japanese wheels but Vossens, which is more BMW than JDM. Easier PCD and offset match, perhaps. We also see TOM’S bucket seats made by Esqueleto.

Other notable Supras include the “Monster GR Supra” exhibited by Work. This is drift champ Daigo Saito‘s work machine, and it’s famous as the first A90 to have 2JZ power. I prefer Max Orido’s A90 though, done up in the iconic Advan livery just like his old Supra. Is there any car that won’t look good in Advan livery? Next to the Yokohama stand was Masato Kawabata’s Toyo-sponsored drift car, the big bro of the 86 that we got to see at TGR Festival Malaysia.

While team mate Farid was lusting over TOM’S LE, I was attracted to the one by Varis – all show no go, fits this author. The bodykit specialist was clever in drawing attention with a modded A80 Supra, done up in a “Rothmans-style” livery on the Varis Supreme kit. Next to it was a dark grey A90 with the new widebody Supreme 90 kit. Much aero, very fierce. They also had a non-wide A90 there, but might as well go all the way, right?

Once the euphoria of the GR Yaris launch subsided, Tokyo Auto Salon 2020 became a Suprafest with some sideshows – we’re not complaining, just lusting.

Toyota GR Supra instrument cluster from BMW: report

The platform and componentry sharing between the G29 BMW Z4 and the Toyota GR Supra is well documented, and the Toyota coupe has at times been criticised for not being as Japanese as it perhaps should be. There’s a variety of BMW parts visible around the cabin, though the Supra’s instrument cluster has been identified as unique to the Japanese brand – until now.

Design Works was acquired by BMW in 1995, and so became part of the larger BMW group family which meant it was no longer allowed to work on projects for other, competing automakers, Motor Trend reported. The design firm’s work in collaboration with other brands is put on display on its site, including brands such as The North Face, John Deere, Asus, Konica Minolta and more.

There was, however, no indication of the Toyota Supra on that list, though why both BMW and Toyota chose to keep this little trait a secret is unknown, given that the commonalities between the G29 Z4 and the Supra are well documented; the identification plate on the Supra even states that it is ‘Made by BMW’. Motor Trend found that the driver instrumentation graphics and physical cluster were designed by BMW’s Designed Works, in addition to the other BMW-sourced parts.

Not only were both the G29 Z4 and the GR Supra developed from the same architecture at the same time, both cars are produced by BMW’s manufacturing partner Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, so it shouldn’t be too surprising to find yet another component, or set of components that are German rather than Japanese in provenance.

To recap, the B58B30 3.0 litre turbocharged inline-six petrol unit in the Supra is the same as the engine that powers the Z4 in its M40i guise, producing 340 PS from 5,000 rpm to 6,500 rpm and 500 Nm of torque from 1,600 rpm to 4,500 rpm, both transmitting to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

Toyota invests US$394 million in flying car company

Toyota recently announced it has invested US$394 million (close to RM1.6 billion) in Joby Aviation, an aerospace company that is developing and commercialising an all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Aside from the significant sum invested, which makes Toyota the lead investor in Joby’s USD590 million Series C financing, the carmaker will also share its expertise in manufacturing, quality and cost controls for the development and production of Joby’s eVTOL aircraft.

According to Joby’s website, the vehicle is a four-passenger air taxi that is capable of hitting speeds of up to 322 km/h and travel more than 241 km on a single charge. It is also touted as being “100 times quieter than conventional aircraft during takeoff and landing, and near-silent when flying over.” Other plus points mentioned include low operating and maintenance costs as well as enhanced safety features.

Toyota has the collaboration reflects its recognition of the long-term potential of the urban air mobility market to meet the evolving needs of society. “Air transportation has been a long-term goal for Toyota, and while we continue our work in the automobile business, this agreement sets our sights to the sky,” said Akio Toyoda, president and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation.

“As we take up the challenge of air transportation together with Joby, an innovator in the emerging eVTOL space, we tap the potential to revolutionize future transportation and life. Through this new and exciting endeavor, we hope to deliver freedom of movement and enjoyment to customers everywhere, on land, and now, in the sky,” he added.

Meanwhile, JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, commented, “this collaboration with Toyota represents an unprecedented commitment of money and resources for us, and for this new industry, from one of the world’s leading automakers.:”

“Toyota is known globally for the quality and reliability of their products driven by meticulous attention to detail and manufacturing processes. I am excited to harness Toyota’s engineering and manufacturing prowess to drive us toward our dream of helping a billion people save an hour (or more) commuting time every day,” he added.

This isn’t the first time Toyota has invested in a flying car company, as back in 2017, it provided 42.5 million yen (about RM1.5 million) to Japanese startup Cartivator to develop its SkyDrive eVOTL two-person multicopter.

Toyota RAV4 Adventure Gear concept to debut at TAS

With the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon coming up real soon, Toyota Industries Corporation has previewed a concept version of the Toyota RAV4 that will be on display at the event. Dubbed the Adventure Gear, the modified SUV looks to be geared towards off-roading, and gets a number of modifications to allow it to do so.

Based on the preview image provided, the RAV4 Adventure Gear features beefier wheels and off-road tyres, which are paired with an exterior kit that consists of a Tacoma-esque grille, side steps and a rugged front apron. There’s also a prominent roof rack fitted, and while there are no shots of the vehicle’s rear just yet, the concept will reportedly have a small ladder to provide easy access to the roof.

It isn’t known if the concept will serve as a preview for an upcoming range of accessories that will be made available to RAV4 customers later on, or if it’s just a one-off demonstration vehicle. The company debuting the concept is responsible to building the RAV4 in Japan under contract from Toyota Motor Corporation, which does make the former a possibility.

In its home country, the RAV4 is offered in a number of grades – including one called Adventure – with a choice of a M20A-FKS 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder (171 PS and 207 Nm) as well as a hybrid A25A-FXS 2.5 litre powerplant (178 PS and 221 Nm).

Toyota GR Supra laps the Nurburgring in just 7:52.17 – three seconds faster than the G29 BMW Z4 M40i!

As we all know, the Toyota GR Supra and G29 BMW Z4 were developed as part of a sports car collaboration involving both companies, with both sharing similar mechanicals but with different philosophies in mind.

The engine used in the Supra is the same BMW unit as seen on the Z4 in its M40i guise, the B58B30 turbocharged straight-six with 340 PS (335 hp) from 5,000 to 6,500 rpm and 500 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm on the Supra. This is paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, allowing the Supra to sprint from 0-100 km/h run in 4.3 seconds, and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h.

However, which of the two is faster around the Nürburgring? Well, that answer has now been answered by Sport Auto, as the media outlet recently posted a video featuring the GR Supra lapping the famous track where many performance cars have been benchmarked.

At the wheel of the fifth-generation sports car is Christian Gebhardt, who managed to set a lap time of 7:52.17 as seen in the video. The recorded time is a hair over three seconds faster than the Z4 that Gebhardt tested back in September 2018, whereby he clocked 7:55.41.

Widening the scope of the comparison, the GR Supra’s time came close to the M2 Competition that was tested in October last year, with the coupe setting a time of 7:52.36. Going back further in time, Sport Auto tested the E92 M3 GTS in 2013 and lapped the circuit in 7:48, while a year later, the M4 Coupe and Aston Martin V12 Vantage S managed 7:52.

FIRST DRIVE: 2020 A90 Toyota GR Supra Malaysian review – RM568,000

We finally get to grips with the A90 Toyota GR Supra, the car that has made for plenty of discussion among staffers at paultan.org, with no shortage of opinion about it. As is already known, the Supra and the G29 BMW Z4 were developed as part of a sports car collaboration involving both companies, and although the fundamentals of both vehicles are common, each supposedly has its own identity, in line with the different philosophies of each parent.

That’s the intent, of course, but the question begs, is it a BMW dressed as a Toyota, or has the Japanese automaker done enough to give the car its own character? No better way than to find out by driving it, which is what Jonathan Lee did. Watch the video to find out what the call on this one is.

The fifth-gen Supra made its Malaysian debut in September, and is available only in a single variant form for our market, a 3.0 litre GTS. The mill is the same BMW unit as seen on the G29 Z4 in its M40i guise, the B58B30 turbocharged straight-six developing 340 PS (335 hp) from 5,000 to 6,500 rpm and 500 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm on the Supra. GALLERY: 2019 Toyota Corolla Altis GR Sport on show at Thailand Motor Expo – 140 PS 1.8L; from RM138k

We now bring you a live gallery of the Toyota Corolla Altis GR Sport from the ongoing Thailand Motor Expo, which is one of six available variants offered in the country, priced from 999,000 baht (RM138,076).

The GR Sport features a 2ZR-FBE 1.8 litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with 140 PS at 6,000 rpm and 177 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, with drive going to the front wheels via a Super CVT-i automatic with seven virtual speeds. Among the non-hybrid variants – others being the base Limo and 1.6G – the GR Sport is the only one that gets the 1.8 litre mill.

The Corolla Altis is also available with a hybrid powertrain in Thailand, with the Entry, Mid and High variants all utilising an Atkinson-cycle 2ZR-FXE 1.8 litre four-pot (98 PS and 142 Nm), an electric motor (72 PS and 122 Nm) and an e-CVT – overall system output is 122 PS.

As the sportiest version of the Thailand-spec Corolla Altis, the GR Sport gets a number of unique styling cues to make it stand out in the line-up. Up front, there’s a black grille garnish with a thick silver strip, along with similarly-coloured inserts in the lower apron.

Additional black accents can be found on the bottom corners of the front bumper, side mirror caps, side skirts, a trunk spoiler and the lower portion of the rear bumper. The 17-inch, fan-style, two-tone alloy wheels are also specific to the GR Sport, and are not used on any other Corolla Altis variant in Thailand.

Inside, you’ll find red accents on the seats and door handles in an otherwise black cabin. As the highest-spec, non-hybrid variant, the GR Sport also gets quite a number of goodies. Standard equipment includes automatic LED headlamps, leather upholstery, an eight-inch touchscreen head unit, a 4.2-inch multi-info display, automatic brake hold and paddle shifters.

The GR Sport’s safety kit is pretty much identical to the 1.6G, with seven airbags, VSC, ABS, traction control, EBD, BA and hill start assist, but with the addition of reverse sensors, a blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert.
